NEW DELHI: A comm on man took the lead in nabbing a snatcher when he was fleeing with an IT executive's purse near the Akshardham temple on Sunday evening. Police said a constable, Mohit, posted at the PCR, helped Bhupendra to catch the accused. Renu Sood, an executive at IBM Noida who lives in Vasun dhara Enclave, was returning home from Kashmere Gate. She had got off at Shakarpur Pusta and had taken a rickshaw to reach the Akshardham bus stop. As soon as she got off the rickshaw , two bikers came and snatched the purse from her, cops said.

CBSE paper leak: 13 students detained Vikas Verma and Rakesh Verma were arrested from New Ashok Nagar in Delhi on Saturday. They were caught with Physics and Chemistry papers in which the answers had already been marked. The papers apparently tallied entirely with the actual question papers. The police said two accused, who are yet to be arrested, were operating from somewhere in Delhi. "We have inputs that they were active in at least one more place in Delhi. NEW DELHI: Twelve people, including four women , were severely burnt in east Delhi after a cooking gas cylinder exploded on Thursday. The incident was reported at 9am from E block in New Ashok Nagar. Two fire tenders were rushed to the spot, fire officials said, and it took 10 minutes to douse the blaze. Some locals had informed police about the incident. Cops then took the injured to Lal Bahadur Shashtri Hospital from where they were shifted to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, an officer stated.

1 killed in house collapses in east Delhi

NEW DELHI: A building collapse in New Ashok Nagar in east Delhi on Tuesday evening left one person dead and seven others injured. According to the police, the owners of the two-storeyed building were in the process of having a third floor added to it. On Tuesday, one of the pillars on the under-construction floor collapsed, and with it, the girders and part of the roof which were supported by the pillar also came down. The walls were reportedly only four inches in width and crumbled under the load of the building.

Couple found hanging in Noida colony

NOIDA: A 32-year-old man and his wife were found hanging from an electric pole and a tree respectively in sector 15 on Monday. An autopsy report later revealed that there was no foul play. The two identified as Pappu Katiyar and his wife Vandana alias Chatto (28) had been married for seven years. The autopsy confirmed that the couple died due to asphyxia, Noida district police chief Ashok Kumar told reporters. According to a police officer, a passerby noticed the bodies around 6.15am.

NEW DELHI: A 43-year-old man, Triloki Nath Adlakha, reportedly committed suicide by jumping from the terrace of his Vasundhara Enclave residence on Thursday morning. Adlakha was a deputy director with the Software Technology Park of India, an autonomous government body. According to the police, the victim had been suffering from depression for the past one year. Nath was a resident of Prayag Apartments in the New Ashok Nagar area. The victim's house is located on the first floor of the three-storey structure.

Neha Yadav lived in Rajveer Colony in east Delhi. Neha's friend, Gaurav, who was accompanying her and tried to save her life, was also injured by the accused, identified as Devender (24). He was arrested by the police from the spot after a short chase. Gaurav worked in the same company as Neha's team leader and lived with his family in Krishna Nagar.

NEW DELHI: The body of a Class X student, kidnapped on April 4, was found dumped in a drain in east Delhi's New Ashok Nagar on Tuesday. The victim was identified, as Rajdeep Singh (16). The police said that Rajdeep was a student of governement school, who was kidnapped while on his way to school. His parents had lodged a complaint, and a kidnapping case was registered. "His parents have alleged that they got a ransom call of Rs 2 lakh,"said the police. The body was found in a drain near Mayur Vihar-III.

Metro moves closer to Noida

NEW DELHI: A month from now, you will reach Connaught Place from Noida in 25 minutes, or even go all the way up to Dwarka in one hour flat. With the trial runs having started on the 13.1-km long Delhi Metro line to Noida Sector 32 on Saturday, Metro is finally reaching other NCR areas. By the year-end, it will enter Gurgaon and reach the Ghaziabad border, followed by the Faridabad border in September 2010. For the trials, the trains were made to run between Yamuna Bank and New Ashok Nagar metro stations from 10 am to 2 pm at a speed of 15 kmph.

Outages continue due to coal shortage

NEW DELHI: For the second week, Delhites continued to face power cuts. Residents of south and east Delhi have been complaining of power cuts for two to three hours every day. Power department officials said the problem is caused by shortage in coal supply to many generating stations. The supply has been affected by cancellation and rescheduling of goods trains. Metro work to start in Noida on Wednesday

NEW DELHI: Work for the Metro will finally begin in Noida on Wednesday. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will start construction work near City Centre in Sector 32 with test piling work. The work would involve making holes in the ground and constructing concrete piles or pillars every 1 kilometre. DMRC has divided the 6.98 km stretch from New Ashok Nagar to Sector 32 in two parts. The first stretch ? about 3.28 km ? is from New Ashok Nagar to Sector 18. It will have stations at Sectors 15, 16 and 18. The 3.7-km second stretch will go from Botanical Garden, through Golf Course to reach City Centre at Sector 32. While the tender will be given by Tuesday, the contract has been awarded to Gammon India.

A man arrested for murdering a 5-year old

NEW DELHI: The police have arrested a man for allegedly murdering a 5-year-old boy in New Ashok Nagar area of east Delhi. The accused, Awadesh Yadav (30), had kidnapped the boy on Thursday and demanded Rs 10,000 ransom from the family. The police said family of the victim, Harsh, knew Yadav well. Harsh was kidnapped from his house in New Kondli area where his father, Shambhu, is a vegetable vendor and taken to a village in Noida district. When Shambhu received the ransom call, he informed the police.

Metro connectivity to 10 Games venues

NEW DELHI: The Phase-II construction of the Delhi Metro, which is progressing at a fast pace, will provide easy Metro connectivity to 10 out of 11 venues of the Commonwealth Games 2010. The venues include: Games Village, Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Delhi University, Thyagaraj Complex, Siri Fort Sports Complex, National Stadium, Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Yamuna Sports Complex and R K Khanna Tennis Complex. DMRC has already completed 25% to 57% work on all the Metro lines passing by Games venues and they will be opened by September 2010, a month before the Commonwealth Games are scheduled.

SHO roughed up by lawyers in Tis Hazari

NEW DELHI: In a shocking incident, the station house officer (SHO) of the New Ashok Nagar police station was beaten up by lawyers in the Tis Hazari court complex on Monday. The SHO, Ashok Tyagi, is currently undergoing treatment in the Hindu Rao Hospital. The incident occurred after 12.30 pm. Tyagi had gone to the court complex to appear as a witness in a murder case, in the court of additional sessions judge Khanna, when he was reportedly attacked by over 20 persons including many lawyers.

HC comes to rescue of rape victim

NEW DELHI: Thanks to Delhi Police's inaction, a married woman was forced to live in illegal custody of a man, who allegedly raped her for 15 days. The alleged rapist had purchased the woman for Rs 15,000. However, it was a Delhi High Court order which came to the woman's rescue. Within a week of receiving a court notice, the New Ashok Nagar police of east district -- where the woman's brother had lodged the complaint -- rescued the woman. The same police had earlier refused to register a case, saying the woman was major and, therefore, no cognizable offence was made out. Justice T S Thakur and Justice J P Singh said the police's decision to turn a blind eye to an offence like the sale of a woman, was a disturbing issue.

The bride, Lata's, brother Satish Baghel reported the matter to the police. "Baghel said his sister was due to be married to an Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh) resident, Yogender Baghel, on June 6. A day earlier, he had a heated argument with his father who had objected to his consumption of alcohol, the police said. The police said Sandeep Agarwal had an altercation with his father on February 19. On February 20, when his father had gone to Rajasthan in connection with their business, Sandeep reportedly shot himself.

NEW DELHI: An auditor associated with the Commonwealth Games 2010 was found dead in mysterious circumstances inside a car near his home in east Delhi . Police found the deceased, SS Viju (37), slumped in the car late on Tuesday. He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared brought dead. "There were no injuries on his body. He was found inside a car outside Nagarjuna Apartments near Mayur Vihar. Liquor bottles were found inside the vehicle. The cause of death is not known yet. We are investigating the case and foul play cannot be ruled out," said a senior police officer.

Bus ferrying students catches fire in Delhi

NEW DELHI: A DTC bus ferrying students to a city school caught fire in east Delhi this morning, injuring the driver and conductor of the vehicle. The incident was reported from New Ashok Nagar at around 8 am, fire brigade officials said. None of the children in the bus, ferrying students of Evergreen School, were injured. The driver and the conductor of the bus suspected some leakage and got down from the bus to inspect it. Delhi court frees rape accused, terms woman, IO 'unreliable'

NEW DELHI: A local court has acquitted two youths of charges of raping a woman five years ago, after holding the alleged victim and investigating officer (IO) as "unworthy of credence". "The perusal of records show that neither the prosecutrix nor the investigating officer is worth lending credence and no reliance can be placed on their testimonies," Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Sharma said. The woman's father had in April, 2002, lodged an FIR with New Ashok Nagar Police Station casting suspicion on accused Matru Lal Gupta and Anil for abducting his daughter, following which the duo was apprehended and slapped with charges of raping the alleged victim.

Two killed in hit-and-run accidents

MUMBAI: Two people were killed in hit-and-run accidents in Bandra and Goregaon on Tuesday. In the first mishap, a 30-year-old worker, Bikram Masih, was hit by a red car near the Bandra bridge on the sea link's south-bound lane. The incident took place around 8.30 pm, when Masih, along with another worker, Ramesh Bhagwansingh (46), got off a company bus. They were crossing the road when the speeding car hit Masih. In the second mishap, a 23-year-old biker, Azhar Khan, was killed in Goregaon after a lorry rammed into him on the Western Express Highway.

LUDHIANA: The police claimed to have cracked 32 cases of snatching and loot with the arrest of members belonging to two gangs on Monday. Assistant commissioner of police, north, Swapan Sharma, "Six people were arrested. In the first case, a gang active in the city for two years and responsible for more than three dozen incidents of snatching and looting was busted. On questioning, the gang members admitted to 14 cases of snatching and 10 of loot. " Those arrested were identified as Mankush Kumar alias Mickey of Santokh Nagar, Rajneesh Kumar alias Rohit of Street Peeru Banda in Salem Tabri, Nabi Kumar alias Nabi Kala of New Kartar Nagar and Pawan Kumar alias Mota of New Ashok Nagar.

Returning from puja, man run over in SE Delhi

New Delhi: A 28-year-old man returning from Durga Puja celebrations at C R Park was run over by an unidentified vehicle in the Lajpat Nagar area in southeast Delhi. He was identified as Sanjeev Bhattacharya, a resident of New Ashok Nagar. Sanjeev's motorcycle hit a car and skidded on the bridge, police said. Police have registered a case against the bus driver and arrested him. After the accident, family members and relatives of the victim protested outside New Ashok Nagar police station asking for strict action to be taken against the bus driver. HYDERABAD: Residents of Parsigutta caught two thieves on Thursday and thrashed them. Both suffered severe injuries and a few hours later, one of them, Tara Singh, succumbed to injuries at Gandhi Hospital, while the other is battling for life. Tara Singh, 40 and Bachan Singh, 30, of Vambay Nagar in Ramachandrapuram went to Ambernagar locality in Parsigutta during the wee hours of Thursday to commit burglaries at locked houses. Thirty-nine people, including 35 police personnel, were injured in last night's arsoning and rioting in Mayur Vihar Phase-III area after enraged locals attacked police posts and damaged public property. A large number of police personnel have been deployed in the area following the rioting after spreading of rumours that the man, who fell from his scooter at a police picket, died.

Country liquor found in milk van, driver arrested

NEW DELHI: A man was arrested for carrying over 100 cartons of country-made liquor in a tempo bearing the logo of Mother Dairy in Ashok Nagar, east Delhi on Thursday. The liquor was meant to be distributed during the forthcoming assembly polls and Diwali. The driver of the vehicle, Sunil Kumar, was trying to go past a police picket near the New Ashok Nagar Metro station, but was stopped.
